Michigan Curve are a tight, hard working, Blues outfit whose members are dedicated to delivering a powerful punch. M.C. lay it down heavy, righteous and with attitude.
Their blue collar backgrounds are reflected in the bands authoritative style be it with hooky riffs, tuff solos or uptown grooves.
The barking slide and growling vocals of Mike Nicolson, the band’s front man, give the band it’s bite. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he is highly influenced by that, as well as Chicago blues and the formative “country” greats. He began playing the guitar shortly after the invention of the wheel. After settling in Canada Mike began a lengthy search for the right people and “The Curve” was born. The heart of the band is Bassist John Clements and Drummer Ken Doskotch. John provides the powerful bass lines along with his arranging and composition talents. Ken, his long term musical partner delivers dynamism and drive with a “rocky” edge. John and Ken have played together in a great number of local bands which makes Ken’s recent comment that he believes in this one, kinda significant.
Keyboards skills are supplied by the delightful Ursula Fox, a young person of the female persuasion. Ursula is a relatively new recruit who’s not unattractive appearance and extensive hat collection brings additional benefit to an outfit whose looks, without her, could best be described as “interesting”. Vern Cruickshank on lead guitar completes the line up. Vern is a serious student of the “masters” from Rush to Maghett and everyone in between but somehow distills his studies into a style that is his own.
While imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and the band does pay homage in their set, to their heroes, it’s not enough for an outfit who want to bring something personal to the party. Michigan Curve’s original material is a varied, mature and danceable spin on what it means to have the blues in the twenty first century.
With their understanding of each others styles and strengths, their focus on giving their customers a big night, you should check them out, you won’t be sorry!
A great live set full of tunes you will know and some you may not but, are going to dig, will remind you why you love the blues.
